- Story Text: Cuba beats baseball arch-rival United States to capture gold at the XIV Pan American Games.
Cuba won gold in baseball at the XIV Pan American Games in Santo Domingo on Tuesday (August 12, 2003) beating the United States 3-1.
The U.S. scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth for their only point of the game.
Cuba then scored a runs in the top of the 6th and 7th innings and then a solo home run in the top of the ninth clinching their ninth consecutive Pan American title.
Mexico won bronze after beating Nicaragua 6-2.
In soccer, Argentina advanced to the gold medal round after beating Colombia 2-1. Colombia scored first with a goal by Abel Aguilar at the 70th minute. Argentina tied from a corner in the fourth minute of injury time.
Argentina scored the golden goal in the 8th minute of extra time.
Brazil also advanced to play for the gold after beating Mexico 1-0. Dagoberto Pelentier scored the only goal of the game in the 85th minute.
The United States swept the swimming events with Benjamin Michaelson setting a new Pan American Record in the 100-metre butterfly at 53.04. World champion Jose Meolans had to settle for silver.
Colombia won two gold medals in weightlifting. Nelson Castro won in the 56kg weight group and Diego Fernando Salazar set a Pan American Games record by lifting 170.00 kg in the 62kg.
