- Story Text: Two women suicide bombers have killed at least 14 other people, one of them a child, when they blew themselves apart at an open-air rock festival staged at a Moscow airfield, Russian security forces said.
The two women suicide bombers killed at least 14 other people, one of them a child, when they blew themselves apart at an open-air rock festival staged at a Moscow airfield on Saturday (July 5), Russian security forces said.
Russian Interior Minister Boris Gryzlov blamed Chechens opposed to President Vladimir Putin's plan, announced on Friday (July 4), to hold a local presidential election in Chechnya in October.
Moscow police spokesman Valery Gribakin told reporters in the early evening 14 people had died in the two blasts and at least 60 were injured. Gryzlov had originally put the toll at 16, excluding the bombers.
No one has so far claimed responsibility.
The women had been prevented from entering the venue of the outdoor rock festival. They blew themselves up outside admission booths at Tushino airfield, where thousands had gathered for the all-day event featuring well-known Russian bands.
The concert on a blisteringly hot day was being wound down gradually to prevent panic, with 200 buses sent to evacuate spectators. Many inside the grounds were unaware of the attack. Organisers of the event said they had been made aware of developments but did not want to cause panic in the crowd by making an announcement.
"Of course we heard about the incidents and we were kept informed (by the police) but we didn't want to say anything to the crowd from the stage as we wanted to be sure it was all correct and checked," said Sergei Galanin one of the organisers of the event.
Some witnesses said they had seen several of the dead and injured.
"We were talking to some of the wounded and saw at least seven bodies," said a young woman who had been at the concert.
Putin sent his condolences to the victims' families.
Moscow hospital officials said some of those injured had shrapnel wounds. Many were also suffering from shock.
"We have 10 people admitted, seven of them suffering from shock and trauma; two are intensive care and one has died after arriving here. Most of the injured we have are suffering shrapnel wounds and are in shock," said Alexander Adamenko, director of hospital number 67.
Last October's attack by Chechen separatists on a Moscow theatre left 129 hostages and 41 guerrillas dead. All but two of the captives died from the effects of a gas used by Russian special forces to disable the hostage-takers. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
