- Story Text: Mexican Ana Guevara has easily won the women's 400 metres at the XIV Pan American Games in Santo Domingo.
Mexican runner Ana Guevara easily defended her Pan American title in the women's 400 metres on Friday (August 08, 2003) winning with a time of 50:36. Hazel Ann Regis of Grenada took the silver and and Guyana's Aliann Pompey won bronze.
The Mexican women took home another gold after Adriana Fernandez crossed the finish line first in the 10000 metres race. Cuba's Yudelkis Martinez came in second and Bertha Sanchez of Colombia took third.
The Mexican men also won gold when German Sanchez won the Men's 50k walk in 4:05:02, more than two minutes ahead of Brazil's Mario Dos Santos Jr. Guatemala's Luis F.
Garcia won bronze.
On the water, men's coxless pair event was won by Walter Naneder and Marcos Morales of Argentina. Brazil won silver and Cuba bronze.
The United States women moved on to the gold medal round in women's basketball after beating Brazil 69-75 in overtime. They will meet Cuba in the finals.
Mexico and Argentina had a shootout in soccer on Friday scoring seven goals between them with Argentina coming out on top 4-3.
Mexico scored first with a goal by Juan Carlos Medina in the 43rd minute. Argentina came back in the 52nd minute with a score by Marcos Glarza. Argentina scored again in the 75th minute but Luis Perez equalised in the 79th.
Argentina went ahead again in the 81st minute, but Diego Martinez scored in the 85th minute on a penalty kick.
Osmar Ferreyra scored the final goal for Argentina in the 87th minute.
Meanwhile, The United States has made special plans to grant transit visas to around 750 Pan American Games athletes who were caught out by the change in regulations announced last week, the U.S. Olympic Committee said on Friday.
USOC spokesman Darryl Seibel said the embassy in Santo Domingo would set up an office in the athletes' village to issue visas so that the competitors could get home.
"What we've done is established essentially a small embassy in the athletes' village so what that means is that the athletes, the coaches, and the officials won't experience any interruption or disruption at all in their competition and training," Seibel told Reuters.
The U.S. government announced on August 2 that Latin Americans making international connections at its airpots would no longer be exempt from obtaining visas.
The ruling, which comes into effect on Saturday, caught out hundreds of athletes who were due to travel home via Miami.
Obtaining a tourist visa is a costly and lengthy process for citizens of most Latin American countries, who usually have to show bank statements, tax returns and proof of employment and pay a fee of around $100. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
