- Story Text: The East German domination of the top ranks of world tobogganing was shaken on Sunday (17 February) when West Germany's Josef Fendt overtook both East German favourites at the World Toboggan Championships in Koonigsee, West Germany to win the men's individual title on the very le??? runs.
Fendt, the champion in 1970, was third behind defending champion Hand Rinn and second-placed Horst Mueller after Saturday's three runs. But on Sunday, Fendt zipped down the artificial ice course in 44.92 seconds to finish with a winning aggregate time of three minutes for the four runs.
Rinn clocked 45.34 seconds and finished second overall. His aggregate was just five-hundredths of a second behind Fendt's. Mueller took the bronze medal with an overall time of 3 minutes and 17 hundredths of second.
But Cast Germany took the top honour in the women's competition when Margit Schumann retained her title with an aggregate four-run time of 2 minutes 49 and 38 hundredths seconds. West German Elisabeth Demleitner finished second in two minutes 50 and 13 hundredths seconds and the bronze medal went to East German Ute Ruehrold, who clocked 2 minutes 50 and 63 hundredths seconds.
