- Story Text: The occasional downpour of rain could not dampen the hot climate inspired by Latin rythms as "tango" fever broke out at the Venice Film Festival on Friday (August 29).
Showing out of competition in the "mezzanotte" section of the festival, "Tango Lesson" could lead to the renaissance of a renewed love for this popular Latin American dance.
The film tells the story of a cinema director who falls in love with the Tango and travels to Argentina and Paris in search of an instructor. She finds him in the form of Pablo Veron. After falling in love the two make a pact: if Pablo manages to teach the director to dance, the director will make Pablo a star of cinema.
Sally Potter, who received two oscar nominations for her previous film "Orlando", wrote and directed the film and stars as herself, telling the story of her real life love for Pablo. Shot in black and white the film concentrates on their joint passion for the famous Argentinian dance.
This is the first film for Argentinain tango superstar Pablo Veron whose spectacular dance routines add a rainbow of colours and life to the film.
"The tango is a profound emotion which comes and changes constantly as you dance", Veron said. To dance the Tango you must have an intellectual comprehension of the steps which are used as the vehicle that interprets the damce. It's very complicated, technical and difficult." Potter and Veron have taken to Tangoing around Venice at photocalls and late night parties and even at the cinema after the showing of "Tango Lesson".
On Saturday (August 30) evening the American film "Niagara, Niagara", directed by Bob Gosse, will be screened as part of the competition. The film stars Robin Tunney and Henry Thomas of "ET", "Curse of the Starving Class" and "Indightment" fame." Niagara, Niagara" tells the story of a love outside the norms of society. Marcy (Tunney) who suffers from Tourette syndrome, a rare illness which causes unstoppable obsessive behaviour, meets Seth (Thomas) a young shoplifter and persuades him to take her to Toronto. The journey, interspersed with adventure and bizarre encounters leads to love between the two and a joint understanding.
