- Story Text: Rabbi Pinhas Menahem Alter, leader of the Jewish Hassidic sect of Gur, died in Jerusalem on Thursday at the age of 69, a spokesman for Israel's ministry of religious affairs said.
The Polish-born Alter was president of the Council of Torah Sages, a body of rabbis that directs the Agudath Israel party that for years played a pivotal role in Israeli politics. Agudath Israel is part of United Torah Judaism which holds four seats in parliament.
Alter's Gur sect has tens of thousands of Orthodox Jewish followers in Israel, Britain, Belgium and the United States.
Alter's funeral was held later in the day when hundreds of his followers, sheltering under umbrellas and waterproofed hats, surged through the streets in driving winds and rain.
