Argentine rower Ulf Lienhard has become the third competitor to fail a doping test at the Pan American Games, organisers said on Thursday.
Lienhard tested positive for cocaine after winning a bronze medal along with Sebastian Massa in the men's lightweight double sculls on Saturday, Pan American Sports Organisation (ODEPA) president Mario Vazquez Rana told a news conference.
"In this case I want to inform you of that the athlete from Argentina is not here and that is good because there could be a problem because that with cocaine could be something delicate," Rana said.
Leinhard also won a silver medal in Saturday's lightweight quadruple sculls alongside Diego Wenrendt, Jose Czsy and Massa.
Under ODEPA rules, Argentina are set to lose both the medal in which Leinhard tested positive, the bronze going instead to Guatemala, and the event in which he subsequently competed, where Brazil will take the silver and the U.S. the bronze.
All three competitors to fail tests at the games have been medal winners.
Letitia Vriedse of Surinam was found to have more than the permitted level of caffeine after winning the women's 800 metres in athletics last Wednesday. American athlete Mickey Grimes also tested positive for ephedrine after winning the men's 100 metres the same evening.
In the women's soccer bronze medal event Mexico beat Argentina 4-1. The gold medal match between Brazil and Canada was suspended after heavy thunderstorms caused the field to be flooded. Cycling and softball were also delayed because of the rain.
Colombian weightlifters won gold medals in both men's and women's finals. Hector Ballesteros won in the men's 85kg event and Ubaldina Valoyes won in the 63kg event.
At the pool, Venezuelan swimmer Ricardo Monasterios set a new Pan American Games record in the 400 metres freestyle with a time of 3:50:01.
Cuba once again beat the United States this time in women's volleyball in three straight sets. They will meet hometown favorites Dominican Republic in the gold medal match. The home team upset Brazil 3 sets to 2.
