- Story Text: French President Francois Mitterrand and Spanish Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez met in the small town of Foix on Friday (October 21) to pay respects to Spanish Republican exiles who died fighting against the Germans in the World War Two.
A small crowd cheered as they arrived in the picturesque southwestern French town, a Socialist bastion liberated from the Nazis during World War Two by Spanish Republicans who had joined the French Resistance.
The two men later laid wreaths at a monument dedicated to the exiles.
The two-day talks between the two long-serving Socialist leaders in Foix was their last bilateral summit as Mitterrand will step down next May after 14 years in power.
At a press conference, the two agreed that a proposal floated in Bonn for a two-tier European Union was unacceptable.
And they said that the Maastricht Treaty must be respected by all present and future members.
