- Story Text: Possible food shortages caused by floods in the Mekong Delta could force Vietnam, the world's third largest rice exporter, to cut or delay exports of the staple.
The death toll from flooding in the delta in the far south, the country's main rice-growing area, rose to 180 on Thursday (October 13) with the confirmed destruction of crops and property surging to 800 billion dong (73 million U.S. dollars).
The floods -- the result of heavy rains in catchment areas further north in China, Thailand, Laos or Cambodia and reported to be the worst in 16 years -- have destroyed at least 200,000 tonnes (tons) of rice in the delta.
Small wooden boats have replaced bicycles as the only way to get around. In some parts of Dong Thap province, 150 kilometres (90 miles) west of Ho Chi Minh City, the water is up to four metres (13 feet) deep.
Villagers have put pigs, chickens, cows and other farm animals in elevated pens. In areas where the water level is low, animals just wade around in the muddy water.
Government aid workers have been distributing food and bottled water to the stricken areas.
Officials denied news reports that the government had ordered a one-month halt to rice exports from mid-October.
Vietnam is the world's third largest rice exporter after the United States and Thailand.
