- Story Text: Devastating mudflows from the Mount Pinatubo volacano on Monday (September 26) forced Philippines President Fidel Ramos to order the evacuation of 30,000 people from threatened villages.
Residents who refused to leave would be forcibly evicted.
Ramos issued the order after Philippine army helicopters on Sunday (September 25) plucked scores of people from trees and roof- tops. Mudflows surged through 15 villages in Pampanga province killing up to 22 people and forcing more than 78,000 to flee as almost 1,400 houses were buried.
Ramos flew over devastated areas and ordered stepped-up relief operations after seeing rivers of steaming mud rampaging down the volcano 100 kilometres (60 miles) north of the capital, Manila.
The mudflows reached a height of four metres (12 feet) in some places and burst 10-metre (30-foot) high defensive dykes set up by villagers around their communities.
Fifteen-thousand people have found shelter in evacuation centres. Some officials have suggested the permanent evacuation of villages surrounding the volcano, but residents have refused to leave until assured of a livelihood in resettlement areas.
Mudflows have been a regular menace to communities around Pinatubo since it erupted in 1991 and dumped millions of tons of ash and debris on the volcano's flanks in one of the century's biggest volcanic blasts.
The Philippine News Agency said 60,000 people had been displaced by the mudflows since Friday and that 2,500 remained stranded in two villages in Bacolor district.
The heavy rains, induced by a series of low pressure areas, triggered flash floods of up to waist deep in low lying areas in Manila, stalling dozens of vehicles and stranding thousands of commuters.
