- Story Text: Serb forces renewed attacks on the government enclave of Bihac in northwestern Bosnia on Wednesday (July 26), shelling the town of Coralici and launching an offensive on government-held Pecigrad, United Nations (U.N.)officials said.
Separatist Serbs from Croatia and Bosnia launched a coordinated attack against the Bihac pocket last week with help from troops loyal to rebel Moslem leader Fikret Abdic.
Government sources and U.N. officials say the Serb objective is to cut the Bihac pocket in half around Coralici, install Abdic as a puppet leader and drive south to wipe out the U.N. "safe area" of Bihac town.
Abdic's fighters appeared firmly in control of key hills near Pecigrad on Wednesday, and local reports spoke of a drive by rebel Moslems aimed at dislodging government Fifth Corps units from Pecigrad.
Rebel Croatian Serbs thrusting into the Bosnian Moslem enclave of Bihac seized the important town of Sturlic last week and up to 1,200 inhabitants have fled, U.N. observers said.
Between 800 and 1,200 refugees had flooded into the centre of the enclave from Sturlic, a town in the path of the Serb onslaught on the main road entering Bihac from the northwest.
A week after the joint Krajina Serb and rebel Moslem attack, Moslems loyal to Abdic have started to clean the ruins in Sturlic and to move into the town.
