- Story Text: A hijacker who seized a small passenger jet in the southern Russian republic of Daghestan blew himself up when police commandos stormed the plane in thick fog early on Thursday (October 27), officials said.
The hijacker, who seized the Yak-40 jet with 27 people on board late on Tuesday, released his last hostages, the plane's two pilots, overnight.
It was the latest in a series of kidnappings in Russia's increasingly lawless southern frontier regions, but the first in which a hijacker seized a plane rather than abducting bus passengers and demanding an aircraft to take him to safety.
The successful police operation contrasted starkly with the bungling of a rescue attempt during a July kidnapping in the same region which left five people dead.
The hijacker, who Interfax news agency named as Mekhtizade Eton-Said-ogly, had demanded a large ransom and safe passage to Iran.
A federal counter-intelligence service officer said all the ransom money paid over had been retrieved during the dawn operation, which started at 6.52 a.m. (0352 GMT).
