- Story Text: Russian customs authorities refused to allow a Lithuanian Airlines cargo aircraft loaded with humanitarian aid for Chechnya into their airspace on Wednesday (January 4).
The cargo included medicine, medical equipment, clothing and 100 Lithuanian-made stoves which had been donated to the organisation Medecin sans Frontiers (MSF) (Doctors without Borders) by residents of Vilnius and Kaunas and by several Lithuanian firms.
In Vilnius, a collection point has been set-up by MSF where residents can bring goods and donations for the Chechen people.
Much of Chechnya has been cut off from regular supplies since Russian troops entered the separatist region on December 11 to crush the Chechen government more than three years after it declared independence from Moscow.
A group of the doctors from MSF were also due to accompany the flight before it was called off.
The cargo is now being stored in Vilnius airport.
