- Story Text: Two of baseball's major league teams have been playing
in Venezuela in order to raise money for the victims of the
floods in Vargas state.
The Atlanta Braves and Tampa Bay, played on Saturday
(March 18) and Sunday (March 19) in Caracas in order to raise
money for the victims of the floods in the Vargas state.
"I think these events are very important not only in order
to help Vargas but for all Venezuelas.At least for the next
days, they will forget about the problems we have and will
think about baseball," said Oswaldo Guillen, player for the
Atlanta Braves.
Other famous beisball personalities such as Galarraga
(Atlanta Braves), Osvaldo Guillen (Atlanta Braves), Jose
Canseco (Tampa Bay) and Miguel Cairo (Tampa Bay) came to the
Caribbean nation to play.
"I felt a bit sad to see so many children and families.
But at least they survived, thanks to God and to the Red Cross
and to all the collaboration they have received.I know they
are comfortable and at least they are getting by," said
Galarraga.
About 30,000 people came to watch each game.
The two day event which left each team with one victory,
raised more than a million dollars for the Vargas state
victims.
"We are here to give happiness and hope to those who lost
everything.With the match we will attempt to help them and we
will give them hope and lots of love," said Miguel Cairo.
It had been 28 years since a major league match had taken
place in Venezuela.
Last December, floods destroyed most of the Vargas state
(located 50 kilometres north of Caracas), killing at least
30,000 people and leaving about 100,000 homeless.
