- Story Text: Indonesian farmers have vandalised a luxury golf course near Jakarta in continuing protests over the compensation they received for the land's acquisition nine years ago.
The farmers sabotaged the luxury golf course at Cimacan in West Java on Monday (June 15) by planting crops on greens and carving the word 'Reform' on a fairway.
They said they were taking revenge on the Cimacan Golf Club for what they consider the meagre compensation they received nine years ago when the land was taken from them.
The peasants planted cassava and bananas on the greens, forcing the closure of the club.
As with many land disputes during the later years of former President Suharto's 32-year rule, the farmers received compensation for land they had worked on for generations, but most Indonesians considered the government offer did not come close to reflecting the true value of the property.
The farmers were paid 30 rupiah per square metre in 1989by golf course owner PT Bandugn Asri Mulya, which worked out at the time to less than 5,000 U.S.dollars for the 31 hectares (77 acres) they had worked since 1961.
On Wednesday (June 17), the farmers took their protest to the land ministry in Jakarta to urge a fair settlement of their case and were met on the steps by Land Minister Hassan Basra Durin.
Indonesia is undergoing its worst crisis in decades, with calls for economic and political reforms.
