- Story Text: A painting by Claude Monet has sold for a record price at Sotheby's Auction House in London.
The painting "Bassin aux nympheas et sentier au bord de l'eau" (Waterlily Pond and Path by Water) sold for almost 20 million pounds (33 million US dollars) - a world record for a work by the painter.
The painting of the water garden at Monet's home at Giverny had been expected to raise between four and six million pounds, according to the auctioneers Sotheby's.
It was bought by an anonymous telephone bidder on Tuesday (June 30) for 18 million pounds (19,801,500 pounds including the "buyers premium").
The previous highest price for a Monet was 13 million pounds, paid ten years ago for "La Prairie".
Tuesday's record-breaking painting was completed in 1900, when Monet spent the entire summer painting his waterlilies and the Japanese bridge in his garden in Giverny.
The English owner had bought the painting in 1954 for 4,500 pounds.
Another painting in the auction, "Ibsen in the Grand Cafe" by Edvard Munch sold for 1.6 million pounds - well above it's reserve estimate of 700,000 pounds.
Sotheby's impressionist and modern art expert Michel Strauss said the auction showed the strength of the art market, especially for very rare, great pictures.
