- Story Text: Sunday is the last day of the Maslenitsa holiday in Russia. This Pre-Christian holiday, the equivalent of 'Mardi Gras', is widely celebrated in the country.
On Sunday (March 1) Russians celebrated Maslenitsa holiday which marks the end of the Russian Winter.
Although March could as well be considered part of the winter and the snow is not likely to melt until mid-April, the worst and coldest months are over.
This year the weather was particularly unusual with temperatures falling down to minus 30 C only to rise again to 5 C the next morning.
The Maslenitsa holiday dates from the Pagan era of the ancient Slavonic gods.To sun-worshipping Slavs it was a celebration of the death of much-hated winter and the arrival of sping.
Maslenitsa comes just before the Orthodox Lent and is the last opportunity to indulge oneself before the big religious fast.Pancakes are the traditional treat during Maslenitsa.Russians stuff them with caviar if can afford it or with plain sour-cream if they have no money for caviar.
