- Story Text: Pope John Paul II departed of an 11-day tour of four Asian and Pacific countries on Wednesday (January 11) The 33,415 km (20,760 miles) trip, the 74-year-old Pontiff's 63rd outside Italy, will take him to the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Australia and Sri Lanka.
Prior to leaving, the Pope held mass at the Vatican where he expressed "profound respect" for Buddhism as he sought to calm a row threatening to mar his visit to Sri Lanka.
In a best-selling book, the Pontiff criticises Buddhism as being "in large measure an 'atheistic' system".
Speaking at his weekly general audience before leaving on the 11-day trip, he told pilgrims at the Vatican he had "profound respect and sincere esteem" for the Buddhist religion.
His comments came amid fears for the safety of the Pontiff following news that two people had been arrested in the Philippine capital Manila for allegedly preparing bombs inside an apartment near where the Pope will stay during his visit.
