- Story Text: - INTRO: The last remaining Bosnian Serbs fled the Sarajevo suburb of Grbavica on Thursday, leaving ruined houses and looted buildings for the returning Moslems.
--------------------------------------------------------------- The last remaining Bosnian Serbs fled the Sarajevo district of Grbavica on Thursday (March 14), the last of five suburbs to be handed over to the Moslem-Croat federation.
In anticipation of the transfer, which is scheduled for Tuesday, thousands of Bosnian Serbs fled the front-line neighbourhood.
They trucked out household goods and the contents of schools and hospitals. Many burnt or blew up their houses to prevent them being used by their former enemies.
Some of the last to leave were 13 Serb soldiers who carted a large cross and bell away from a makeshift Orthodox church.
Unarmed United Nations (U.N.) police patrolled the town on foot and in vehicles, supported by NATO combat troops. Their presence has helped to reassure Moslems returning to the nearby suburb of Memici.
Most of the Moslems who left were forced to abandon their homes and surrender most of their possessions by the Bosnian Serbs at the beginning of the war.
Those returning were greeted by scenes of destruction - buildings either smashed by the fighting or deliberately destroyed by departing Serbs.
United States (U.S.) NATO Lieutenant Randy Ellsworth said the 30 families who had returned to Memici had so far had no problems, and were gradually piecing together their lives.
