- Story Text: One of the rarest and most expensive stamps in the world, the Mauritius Blue, was on display under tight security in the Dutch Postal Museum in Amsterdam on Thursday (November 10).
The museum recently acquired the famous stamp and has valued it at an estimated two million Dutch guilders (1.2 million United States dollars).
The museum has installed special lights to preserve the stamp and has put two security guards on duty by the exhibit.
The Mauritius Blue, which dates back to 1847, was designed and printed, along with a Mauritius Red, by a watch maker on an Indian Ocean island. It was originally valued at two pence.
Printing errors and evidence that the stamp was cut by hand have added to its individuality and, consequently, its value.
Museum curators say that to ensure the proper conservation of the stamp they will only be able to exhibit it periodically.
