- Story Text: Italy's new coach Dino Zoff vowed to break with the defensive ways of his predecessor Cesare Maldini and seek a more attacking style of play.
Italy's new coach Dino Zoff, who is preparing his team for the first game under his tutelage, said on Monday (August 31) his side would not copy the style of his predecessor Cesare Maldini.
Zoff, who was Italy's goalkeeper and captain when they won the World Cup in 1982, replaced Maldini after Italy lost to France in the quarter-finals of the World Cup last July.
Maldini had been heavily criticised for an extremely defensive style of play, the kind of game Zoff said he would try to avoid.
"It (the style) will change, it will change," Zoff told a news conference after his first day of training with the national team, who face Wales on Saturday in a European championship qualifier.
"You can't always have control of the game the way you'd like, but we're going try our best to impose our own style of play, even on Saturday when we will play without any special worries even though it will be a tough game," he added.
Christian Vieri, who was bought by Italy's Lazio from Atletico Madrid of Spain for 28 million US dollars on Friday, spoke to journalists after the Italian training session and said the amount of money which had changed hands on behalf of his skill had not changed him.
"I always remain calm" Vieri said "I hope to continue as I have been and am working to give my best.
