- Story Text: A traffic pile-up involving dozens of vehicles on
Interstate 84 in Pendleton, Oregon on Saturday has left six
dead and many more injured.
At least 50 vehicles were involved in the accident on
Interstate 84 about 175 miles east of Portland on Saturday
(September 25) after a dust storm blinded drivers.
Officials report that the dust storm had reduced
visibility to zero on the freeway early in the morning.
The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) said two
crashes in the westbound lane, each involving trucks and
passenger vehicles, each killed one person.
At the same location in the eastbound lane a crash
involving five trucks and 11 vehicles claimed four lives.
The accidents in the wheat and sagebrush country 175 miles
east of Portland happened late Saturday morning.
Crews from ODOT blocked the freeway at Stanfield and
Pendleton and rerouted traffic through Walla Walla,
Washington.
At least 23 victims were taken to area hospitals.Two were
listed in critical condition at Good Shepherd Community
Hospital in Hermiston and three were on the critical list at
St.Anthony's Hospital in Pendleton.
Some were transfered from St.Anthony's to a hospital in
Walla Walla for treatment.
