- Story Text: Gorillas in Kahuzi National Park in Zaire are under threat from a nearby refugee camp of 130,000 Rwandans on the edge of the reserve.
About 258 gorillas live in the park's forest where many of the scenes of the award-winning film "Gorillas in the Mist" were shot.
The Rwandan refugee camp is just two or three kilometres away from the gorillas' main habitat. Refugees are already beginning to enter the park to poach small animals and cut wood.
The park director fears that the delicate infrastructure of the forest will be destroyed, but only has 100 guards to patrol the park's 600-kilometre perimeter.
The gorillas are familiar with seeing visitors and may not be aware of the danger posed by the refugees
