- Story Text: INTRO: Russia has made a formal request to join the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the OECD said in a statement on Tuesday (May 21).
The request, which also includes applications to join the OECD's International Energy Agency and Nuclear Energy Agency, was conveyed in a letter from Russian Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin to OECD Secretary-General Jean-Claude Paye on Monday evening (May 20), the OECD said.
OECD finance, trade and other ministers were briefed on the request at an opening session on Tuesday (May 21) of two-day annual talks which will in part seek to map out the organisation's future.
Russia joins a lengthening queue of would-be members as the organisation gradually opens its doors to the former East Bloc.
Although Russia had not yet formally been in the running to join, it will be sending a delegation to meet OECD ministers once they have finished their talks on Wednesday (May 22).
Poland is next in line to join after Hungary, which is attending its first talks as the OECD's 27th member.
