- Story Text: The Russian flag was lowered for the last time in Germany on Thursday (September 1) at the old Soviet military airfield of Sperenberg.
President Boris Yeltsin had flown out of Germany earlier after official ceremonies on Wednesday.
Russia was represented at the Sperenberg ceremony by the Commander-in-Chief of its forces in Germany, General Matvei Burlakov.
Burlakov, recently appointed a Russian deputy defence minister, lowered the Russian flag, then cut it free.
Burlakov and his senior commanders then left for Moscow.
Russia is hoping for improved relations with Germany with the official withdrawal of the more than 340,000 troops it has maintained on German territory.
The pull-out over the past four years has been one of the biggest peacetime troop movements in history.
The Russian government wants Burlakov to use his new position to ease social problems, particularly housing difficulties, likely to be experienced in the next two to three years by the returning soldiers.
The last Russian soldiers will leave Sperenberg next month.
