- Story Text: Burma and Vietnam took an historic step towards closer relations on Saturday (March 11) with the signing of key economic agreements in Hanoi.
In his first official visit to Vietnam, Burma's military leader General Than Shwe met Vietnamese President Le Duc Anh before flying to Ho Chi Minh City, the country's biggest commercial centre.
There was no immediate word on the details of the two economic agreements signed by the leaders in a ceremony which marked a thaw in relations between two once-isolated countries.
Burmese officials in Vietnam said they were also aiming for accords on cultural exchanges, civil aviation and cooperation against the narcotics trade.
Than Shwe, chairman of Burma's ruling State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) and Prime Minister, met Vietnamese General Secretary Do Muoi in Hanoi on Thursday.
The general's landmark visit is returning Vietnamese Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet's visit to Rangoon last May.
Communist Vietnam is further down the road to economic liberalisation and wide-ranging diplomatic and political relationships that the SLORC has decided to pursue for Burma.
Vietnam is due to join the previously non-communist Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) next July, and prospects of Burma's joining the regional grouping were expected to figure in Than Shwe's talks in Hanoi.
Burma and Vietnam signed agreements on trade and tourism during Kiet's visit to Rangoon.
