- Story Text: Concert violinist and conductor Yehudi Menuhin visited Romania on Thursday(Sept 7) to open an International music festival honouring his late mentor, leading Romanian composer George Enescu.
"Part of my heart is in Romania," Mehuhin, 79, told Reuters Television at Bucharest's airport on his arrival from Prague accompanied by Princess Margareta, eldest daughter of Romania's exiled ex-King Michael.
"It is Enescu and the gypsies," added Lord Menuhin, whose ties to the Balkan country date back to 1927, when the child prodigy studied violin with Enescu, who was then at the peak of his musical career.
Enescu died in Paris in the 1950s, refusing to return to Romania as communists took power after World War Two and forced King Michael from the throne and into exile.
Like Menuhin, Enescu also had several strings to his bow.
He was a consummate violinist and conductor, and a composer whose symphonies were often inspired by Romania's rich folklore and its colourful gypsy performers.
Following in his mentor's footsteps,Menuhin, a New Yorker by birth who adopted British citizenship in 1985, is a supporter of Romania's exiled royals and an honorary member of a charity which Princess Margareta founded in Romania after the 1989 end of Communist rule.
Before leaving Romania on Friday (Sept 8), Menuhin accompanied Princess Margareta to several of her charities for the elderly and the sick in and around the Romanian capital Bucharest.
Margareta has been able to freely travel to Romania, but post-communist authorities refuse to grant a visa to her father, since the ex-King was feted by hundreds of thousands of Romanians on an emotional 1992 Easter homecoming.
Late on Thursday, Menuhin conducted London's Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in an Enescu and Brahms concert in a huge palace built by Romania's late dictator Nicolae Ceausescu.
