- Story Text: The skies over Bangkok have been filled with hundreds
of brightly coloured kites in Thailand's sixth international
kite festival.
Flyers from seventeen countries met on Saturday (March
20) to compete at a sports stadium on the outskirts of Bangkok.
Despite a slight decline in the number of participating
teams, the biannual event was a visual feast of colours and design.
A highlight of the event was a massive kite from Britain
shaped like a scuba wetsuit. The 12-metre soft kite was among
several British kites on display and was certainly a winner
with spectators.
Among the most bizarre kites was a giant flying lizard
launched by a German team to the delight of hundreds of
children gazing skyward.
The United States team, called Bay Area Sundowners, proved
yet again that they are champions of formation-flying with
their 'Hyper' stunt kites. Each array of kites trails long
tails behind it, yet the Sundowners flew them in and out
without entangling their tails.
The Sundowners are named after the famous United States
World War II jet fighter wing, and team leader Greg Wong
claimed no other team were capable of flying that number of
kites in perfect unison.
Kite flying was enormously popular in Thailand during the
Sukhothai era between 1238 and 1438.Now this colourful sport
is enjoying a revival, and many spectators were attracted to
watch the flyers perform their routines.
