- Story Text: INTRO: Hawaiian surfers have swept the men's final of the OP Pro Championships in Hawaii, while Australia's Layne Beachly took top honors for the women.
Hawaii's Kaipo Jaquias won the 40,000 US dollar OP Pro Surfing Championship in Haleiwa, Hawaii on Sunday (November 24). The contest was blessed with 4-5 metre waves, giving surfers an ample selection of scoring opportunities.
Jaquias beat out Pancho Sullivan, also of Hawaii, who was awarded perfect tens by the international five-judge panel in preliminary competition the same day. Derek Ho, another Hawaiian, finished third in the final phase of the competition which was based on the surfers top three waves.
Patricia Rossi of Tahiti finished in 2nd place in the women's division with Lisa Anderson of the United States third.
The OP Pro is the first event of the Red Dog Triple Crown of Surfing series and the second to last contest on the ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) World Tour.
