- Story Text: French fuel supplier Elf joined the Williams and Benetton Grand Prix motor racing teams at an appeal on Thursday (April 13) before an independent panel at the Paris headquarters of the International Motor Racing Federation (FIA) over the ruling body's decision that fuel used by them in Brazil was irregular.
Benetton's world champion Michael Schumacher of Germany and Briton David Coulthard of Williams were disqualifed after finishing first and second in the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Both were also fined $30,000 for using an irregular fuel during practice and qualifying.
On Wednesday (April 12), Elf issued a statement saying that FIA had been right to declare the fuel irregular, admitting some earlier statements to the press by Elf and the two teams concerned had been based on information received before results of a later analyis.
They may now plead mitigating circumstances in an effort to have the punishments reduced.
Leaving after the morning session of the appeal Benetton director Flavio Briatore said only that the first part of the case had been heard and they would have to see what happened later in the day.
A lawyer for one of the of the parties said the tribunal had been very interested in the technical issues.
