- Story Text: - INTRO: Bosnian Serbs flee Sarajevo suburb of Grbavica, leaving behind ruined houses and looted buildings.
--------- The last remaining Bosnian Serbs fled the Sarajevo district of Grbavica on Thursday (March 14), the last of five suburbs to be handed over to the Moslem-Croat federation.
In anticipation of the transfer, which is scheduled for Tuesday, thousands of Bosnian Serbs have fled the front-line neighbourhood as they did the four areas transferred before it.
With federation control looming, Bosnian Serbs trucked out household goods and the contents of schools and hospitals. Many burnt or blew up their houses to prevent them being used by their former enemies.
United Nations (U.N.) aid workers who distributed bread and soup to the needy in Grbavica on Thursday morning said there was a near riot as groups of young paramilitaries pushed to the front, shoving elderly people aside.
Unarmed U.N. police helped to keep order, as they patrolled the area on foot and in vehicles, supported by NATO combat troops.
Their presence has helped to reassure Moslems returning to the nearby suburb of Memici. Most had been forced to abandon their homes by the Bosnian Serbs at the beginning of the war.
Returning Moslems were greeted by scenes of destruction - of buildings either smashed by the fighting or deliberately destroyed by departing Serbs.
United States (U.S.) NATO Lieutenant Randy Ellsworth said the 30 families who had returned to Memici had so far had no problems, and were gradually piecing together their lives.
