- Story Text: The ceasefire in Bosnia-Herzegovina was shaken on Wednesday (January 18) by continued fighting in the Bihac enclave.
Sporadic fighting was reported in the northwest Bihac enclave, where government troops and Bosnian Serb forces clashed to the west of Bihac town, with 21 artillery rounds registered by the United Nations (U.N.).
Serb forces have been trying to seize a water reservoir supplying Bihac town from the government 5th Corps who retook it in a surprise attack last Friday (January 13).
UNPROFOR (U.N. Protection Force) units in Bihac have been trying to mediate in Bihac and put an end to sporadic violation of the ceasefire agreement.
On Wednesday, Canadian Colonel Jean Lemieux, UNPROFOR commander for the Bihac sector, met Bosnian Moslem and Serb forces commanders and said afterwards he hoped to put an end to the fighting.
The Commander of Serb forces near Bihac, Colonel Radivoje Tomanovic, accused Moslem units of violating the latest ceasefire agreement.
The U.N.-brokered ceasefire was aimed at reviving talks to end the 33 month-long Bosnian war, but plans to deploy peacekeeping troops between the rival armies have been blocked by haggling over key provisions of the truce.
