- Story Text: China dominated the 11th Asian Athletic Championships which ended on Sunday (September 24) with tiny Qatar taking second place in the medals table.
China's medal tally of 20 gold, 13 silver and 5 bronze was a class above the tiny Gulf state which held on to its second place with two gold medals on the final day.
Gold for Qatar runners in the 1,500 metres and 4x400 relay left it with five gold, two silver and four bronze, ahead of another Asian giant, Japan, with three gold, seven silver and five bronze.
The Asian Amateur Athletics Association (AAAA) gave its award for most outstanding athlete, known as the "First President's Medal", to men's and women's distance runners, Sa'ad Al-Ashamari of Saudia Arabia and Wang Junxia of China, who both won two gold medals.
The AAAA decided the 12th Asian Athletic Championships will be held in Fukuoka, Japan in 1998.
