- Story Text: As delegates arrived for the final day of the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, Egypt, on Tuesday (September 13) it appeared the 180 members would reach an agreement on the policy document due to presented at the end of the day.
Namibia health minister Nickey Iyambo said there had been give and take by the members and he thought progress had been made.
Conference deputy secretary-general Joseph Shamie said the Vatican, which has been criticised for its intransigent view, was one out of 180 delegations and it was entitled to express its view.
Commenting on whether the Vatican had delayed agreement on the policy document, Shamie said the conference would end on time on Tuesday.
Yaacov Gil, Israeli Minister for Implementation, said he hoped the Vatican would be flexible and that progress could be made.
Conference committee chairman Fred Sai, who was responsible for drawing up the policy document said the report was designed for those women with no hope for controlling their own reproductive lives.
At a press conference for the European Union, Franz Kroppenstedt, German State Secretary of the Interior, said there have been evolutionary moves, especially for women, since the last U.N. conference in Mexico City.
He said many changes are taking place within society, and that women should be treated as equals to men when it comes to education, health, sexual and reproductive rights. He said he was satisfied with the European Union document.
He said the EU believed there was no general right to abortion but that legal abortion should exist putting into consideratrion the medical view. This view agrees with the Mexico City conference.
About 15,000 delegates have been meeting in an attempt to solve the world's growing over-population problem.
