- Story Text: For the first time a woman and her dog have won the canine Frisbee Disc 'world' finals in Washington D.C.
Regional winners from across the United States gathered in front of the Washington Monument on Saturday (September 13) to see which pairing could run, jump and catch frisbees in true champion style.
Director and judge Peter Bloeme pointed out that dogs of pure breed and mixed breed could join in what was not only fun, but great exercise.
The title "man's best friend" was amended to "woman's best friend" when Melissa Heeter of Cartersville, Georgia and her dog Ariel Asah, put on the best show for the judges and thousands of spectators.
Competitors were judged on difficulty of catches, mini-distance catches and originality during the freeflight rounds.
Heeter, who won the Southeast Regional final held inAtlanta in May, said one of the main things to remember in a competition like this is that it is a true team sport.
In addition to capturing international recognition as World Champions, the winning dog/owner team received a 1,000 dollar savings bond and a year's supply of dog food.
