- Story Text: The 96th annual American International Toy Fair kicks
off Monday (February 8) in New York.A host of manufacturers
will be trying to knock Furby the fuzzy chatterbox off his
throne as the reigning toy king.
The world's most famous doll, which was introduced at
the New York Toy Fair in 1959 is making a big splash at this
years fair.Barbie, who will be celebrating her 40th birthday
later this year has a tattoo, on her ankle.
There's an NBA Barbie, as the basketball season gets off to
a late start this season, and a new cd-rom Barbie will be
launched where kids with computers will be able to control a
Barbie equipped with a snowboard or in-line skates.
Another new computer gadget is a microscope that connects
to your p.c., showing images clearly on a big screen,
magnifying up to 300 times.
Last Christmas' hot toy, the Furby is trying to hold onto
to its crown, by introducing a wider range of the original toy
with the tiny talking critter decked out in giraffe, tiger,
dalmatian and snow leopard prints. There's also baby Furby and
an electronic game "Find the Missing Furby".
With the release of a new Star Wars film, Hasbro has a huge
display of its film related memorabilia, old and new.
"Star Wars has something for everyone, and I think, very
much like classic toys where people have enjoyed this movie,
this phenomenon for so many years there will be a whole new
breed of people that will be bought into the fold, so I just
think its great" Wayne Charness, Vice President of
Communications at Hasbro explained to Reuters Television.
The news stun gun is bound to be a popular 'get' for
moviegoers, along with the flash back photos.
The Toy Fair is the first chance to get a hint at what will
be 'hot' under the Christmas tree this year.
