- Story Text: Frenchmen Jean Yves Josserand and Thierry Barboux won the first International Alpinism Racket Race at Aussois in the Maurienne Valley, France on Sunday (January 18).
Forty two-man teams started the three hour race in the French Alps aiming to reach an elevation of 1600 metres walking on racket shoes and aided by nothing more than ski poles.
The course covered both snow-laden valleys and rocky ridges, the competitors using a combination of nordic style skiing movements and traditional walking.
The French team of Josserand and Barboux led the field home in a time of three hours.
Josserand afterwards said that, in his opinion, a team of two has to first of all understand each other and then needsto communicate well during the race with one driving the team.
He said that he and Barboux had decided to start at a slow and regular pace so that they would conserve enough energy for the steep climbs and the difficult descent.
