- Story Text: New Yorkers will have the chance to watch a world class
squash tournament while waiting for a train.A glass court has
been installed in Grand Central Train Station where tens of
thousands of passengers can see the sport everyday -- possibly
for the first time.
The world's best squash players were in New York on
Friday (January 22), practicing for a tournament that is
expected to attract 30 thousand viewers a day at the game
venue. However, most members of the audience will not even see
an entire set of the competition, only a shot or two as they
go about their business.
Grand Central Terminal has recently had a multi-million
dollar renovation, and it makes a grand venue for a squash
game, especially with huge ornate chandeliers hanging
overhead.
Players, including the world's top ranked Peter Nicol of
Scottland, warmed up on the court on Friday as commuters
passed by, some stopping to look.Comments from onlookers in
the train station ranged from "neat" to "strange." However,
the players were more than pleased to be there.
Peter Nicol proclaimed Grand Central was "amazing." He
said: "The chandelier right above the court, sometimes you get
distracted by it.It's just amazing being in this sort of
venue, and all the people coming through as well. It's unique,
unique."
Nicol practiced with the number 11 ranked player and
English team captain Chris Walker who said, "You've got a
hundred thousand people a day coming through here seeing the
court. It just makes you feel something special. You want to
do your best to make everyone happy and enjoy it while it's
there."
The tournament begins on Saturday (January 23).Nicol is
expected to play his fiercest opponent, current world
champion Canadian Johnathan Power, in the semi-finals
scheduled for January 27.
