  • Story Text: NATO allies gathered in Brussels on Friday (August 19) for the memorial service of former Secretary-General Manfred Woerner, who lead the alliance through the end of the Cold War.

    Flags flew at half-mast at NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation) headquarters outside Brussels and staff placed wreaths at the entrance where pall bearers brought in Woerner's coffin for a private ceremony.

    Woerner died from cancer a week ago aged 59.

    Military staff stood to attention as the simple coffin, covered in the blue alliance flag, was taken inside for an intimate remembrance of Woerner before the main memorial service.

    Foreign and defence ministers from many NATO nations and some from Eastern Europe attended a memorial service for Woerner at the St Jacques sur Coudenberg church in central Brussels after the private ceremony.
