- Story Text: France sounded a warning to world rugby on Saturday (30 October) with a crushing 34-6 win over Australia at the Prac Des Princes, in Paris.
SYNOPSIS: It was France's biggest winning margin and highest score against Australia. They scored six tries, four of them converted, a penalty goal and a dropped goal to Australia's two penalty goals. Had full back Aguirre been in better form as a goal kicker, the French could have registered their highest ever score against an international opponent. The dubious privilege of being of the receiving end of the French record goes to England, who lost 37-12 in 1972. The power of the French forwards even in the absence of injured locks Imbernon and Palmie, laid the groundwork for their win.
The French won 19 decisive line-outs to the Australians' 11. They also won the rucks overwhelmingly, so that now captain Astre at scrum-half was given every opportunity to show why he was brought back to lead the side in place of Jacques Fouroux.
The try of the game started when Astre made an early run on the right, threw a long over-arm pass to Skrela who took it through the middle towards the posts to move the ball across to Bertranne. Two perfect passes then by Bertranne and Sangalli put Averous clear on the far left wing to score. This was one of Australia's two penalty goals.
The Australians didn't score again after that. They fought gallantly, but it was like trying to stop a tidal wave.
