- Story Text: Communist-led insurgents have been holding grimly to their positions south-west of the Khmer Republic capital, Phnom Penh.
The insurgents are entrenched as close as seven miles (11 kilometers) from the centre of Phnom Penh. In the Ba Kou area, they have given little ground in the face of an armoured drive by Government forces.
By Thursday (7 February) the Government forces had advanced only 400 meters (yards) after ten days of fighting. The front lines were only about 100 metres (yards) apart.
Government infantry and armored personnel carriers used cannon fire and gun-launched grenades against the insurgents, who have been trying to protect captured artillery, positioned about a mile (about 1.5 kilometers) behind their lines.
The insurgents have been returning fire with grenades and cannon shells.
Phnom Penh is now encircled by a defence ring with Government forces trying to check the insurgent's drive against the capital. However, the insurgents have kept up a rocket attack on the city, sometimes from positions within the defence ring.
