- Story Text: Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon arrives back in Israel and amid heightened security and house demolitions, Palestinian officials say that a "crisis cabinet" will be formed on Thursday.
Prime Minister Ariel Sharon flew home early from New Delhi on Thursday (September 11) following two Palestinian suicide bombings which killed at least 15 people on Tuesday (September 9).
Sharon prepared to consult his security cabinet on further military moves against Palestinian militants in an emergency session scheduled for later on Thursday.
Meanwhile the Palestine Liberation Organisation's (PLO) policy-making executive committee met on Thursday to discuss candidates for a scaled-down "crisis cabinet".
"I believe this crisis group and government, which will be limited in its number, will be formed today. I do not think the number of the government will exceed 10 members,"
said committee member and Palestinian Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Yasser Abed Rabbo.
The Palestinian parliament, he said, could meet as early as Sunday (September 14) to ratify the new prime minister and his cabinet.
Palestinian political sources said there was disagreement among leaders of Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's dominant Fatah faction on the size and makeup of the new cabinet.
Trying to defuse a political crisis amid the violence, Palestinian parliament speaker Ahmed Qurie said he had accepted Arafat's nomination for prime minister to replace Mahmoud Abbas, a moderate who resigned last week.
In Jerusalem, security was tight a day after an Israeli missile strike narrowly failed to assassinate Hamas official, Mahmoud al-Zahar. Al Zahar's son and a bodyguard were killed in the strike on his home in Gaza on Wednesday (September 10). Al-Zahar's house in Gaza was flattened by Israeli forces hours later and overnight Wednesday the home of an Al-Aqsa Martyr's Brigade miltant was also blown up in Ramallah.
In Hebron, Israeli troops demolished the house of another Hamas activist and in Rafah, troops backed by tanks and bulldozers raided the Rafah refugee camp overnight, demolishing 14 homes.
Israel says it will keep up military action until Palestinian authorities crack down on militant groups as required by the peace plan, which envisions reciprocal confidence-building steps and a Palestinian state by 2005. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
