- Story Text: Emergency workers in El Salvador continued to work
around the clock to distribute the thousands of pounds of
international aid that has poured into the country since an
earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale toppled
buildings and caused mudslides.
Salvadoran and volunteer emergency workers continued
on Friday (January 19) distributing aid to the thousands of
victims of Saturday's earthquake that left close to 700 people
dead and thousands homeless.
With continued government inspections revealing at least
120,000 homes left uninhabitable by the earthquake, a United
Nations spokesman in El Salvador, made an appeal for
additional aid to add to the massive, five-day-old
international relief operation.
Authorities tried to lift people's spirits, organizing
soccer games, puppet shows and traditional party "pinatas" for
those who were not waiting for rice and beans doled out at the
end of hours-long lines at a tent city just outside the
capital of San Salvador.
