- Story Text: Clashes have erupted in Baghdad's Shi'ite slum of Sadr City area and in
the Sunni town of Ramadi.
Clashes continued in Sadr City on Saturday (October 2), between
rebels loyal to Shi'ite cleric Moqtada Sadr and U.S. forces as violence
intensified in other parts of the country.
Mehdi Army fighters fought U.S. forces from street corners. The
fighters fired guns and rocket propelled grenade (RPG) launchers.
Residents said they came under attack by the military overnight.
There have been regular clashes in Sadr City but these come as the US
military pressed on with a huge offensive in Samarra to try and regain control
of rebel-held cities.
The U.S. military has pledged to wrest all rebel-held areas from
insurgents before the end of the year so elections can be held in January.
Iraq's Defence minister said the offensive would begin in October and Samarra
appears to be the first step.
In operations on Friday, U.S.-led forces said they killed more than 100
guerrillas in air strikes and street-to-street combat in Samarra, while around
35 insurgents were captured, 25 of them inside the Golden Mosque, a revered
ancient Shi'ite shrine.
In Ramadi, a mainly Sunni town west of Falluja, where US planes
destroyed 5 houses overnight, residents said 3 Iraqis had been killed and 4
wounded in clashes with American soldiers.
Ramadi is amongst the rebel-held cities the U.S. forces plan to re-take
together with Falluja, Sadr City and Samarra.
