- Story Text: 2004 Eurovision Contest winner Ruslana has received
an award from her nation's president.
Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma on Tuesday (May
18, 2004) met the singer whose success won the country first
place at Eurovision Song Contest this year.
Singer Ruslana, admired at home in the Ukraine for
mixing modern rhythms with ancient Ukrainian meolodies, won
Eurovision at the weekend with passionate vocals in "Wild
Dances."
Kuchma presented Ruslana with an "Artist of the
People" award. He said: "Dear Ruslana, respected friends.
Let me first of all congratulate our charming winner with
such an incredible success. It's not only our talented
singer's and her group success, I think it's a success of
the whole Ukraine. I sincerely thank you for that."
Officials, delighted at any event portraying the
ex-Soviet state in a positive light, hailed the outcome as
a triumph for a
culture little known elsewhere on the continent.
With its victory, Ukraine becomes host for next year's
50th Eurovision Contest, seen by authorities as a chance to
improve an image scarred by poverty, political scandals and
corruption.
Some deride Eurovision as a kitch and glitz
extravaganza, but the event draws more than 100 million
television viewers.
