- Story Text: Security is being tightened around Evian in France
ahead of the this weekends G8's summit expected to draw
thousands of protesters.
Thousands of demonstrators are expected at this
weekend's summit of the G8 industrialised nations in Evian,
and security across the region has been tightened.
On Thursday (May 29) police set up patrols around nearby
Lake Leman, and established checkpoints around the city.
"We have created an operational emergency and civil defence
headquarters for the summit. The services here are include
everyday services such as rescue personnel, firemen and and
civil security. There are also experts in nuclear biological
and chemical weapons - we have the all these services at our
disposal able to help us if we need their skills", a French
security officer said.
The summit will bring together the leaders of the G8
countries, which include the U.S., Canada, France, Britain,
Germany, Italy, Japan and Russia for discussions expected to
focus on the global economy and terrorism.
Small clusters of anti-globalisation protesters mainly from
France, Germany and Italy are arriving at an "alternative
village" set up near the small town of Annmasse on the
French-Swiss border. They are largely expected to stay away
from Evian itself, issuing a statement vowing to keep things
calm.
Several NGO's said in a statement that they had decided on
the steps after "police excesses during the anti-G8
demonstrations in Genoa in 2001 which led to the death of
(protester) Carlo Giuliani."
Still, residents of Annmasse were taking no chances,
boarding up shops and homes near the centre of the town.
Meanwhile U.S. President George W. Bush is expected to
meet with French President Jacques Chirac on the sidelines of
the summit on Monday (June 2) -- their first meeting since
tensions developed over the U.S.-led war in Iraq.
The two presidents have not met bilaterally since
November, although they have had contact with each other by
telephone in recent weeks. France is attempting to
overcome the rift between Paris and Washington over the war
that ousted Saddam Hussein. France led opposition to the war.
The G-8 opens Sunday (June 1) in Evian and closes Tuesday
(June 3).
