- Story Text: A meeting of the NATO-Russia council has opened in
Moscow, the first such gathering of the body set up in May
last year to implement closer global security co-operation
between the West's top defence organisation and Russia.
NATO Secretary-General George Robertson and ambassadors
of all 19 member states were in Moscow on Tuesday (May 13) for
the first meeting of the NATO-Russia Council.
Before the opening of the one-day meeting of the Council,
Robertson met Russia's Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and
Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov.
Addressing the opening session of the NATO-Russia council
Robertson said the body had managed to achieve a great deal
before in its first year.
"To those who ask whether there is any meat on the bones
of the NATO-Russia council I say this: find another single
international institution that has accomplished so much before
its first birthday," said Robertson.
The body was set up last May, with the aim of building
stronger and closer co-operation between NATO and Russia in
areas of international security and the global fight against
terrorism.
Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov said his country
viewed its new relationship with NATO as "extremely
important".
"We find this meeting extremely important. This is the
first time when all the twenty members have gathered in
Moscow. And to us it proves once again our common desire to
work jointly on the solution of the security problems in the
Euro-Atlantic region. This task is especially important in the
conditions when there is a great need for consolidated efforts
of all the countries to form the new architecture of security,
which would ensure peace and stability in the face of new
threats," said Igor Ivanov.
The NATO Secretary-General is due to hold a separate
meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin later in the
day.
