- Story Text: Indonesian judges deliver first verdict on Bali bombing
suspect Amrozi as relatives of the victims await harshest punishment.
Indonesian court convened on Thursday (August 7) to
pass judgment on Amrozi who has been charged as one of the
key plotters in last October's Bali bombings, which killed
202 people, mainly foreigners partying in nightclubs.
"Allahu akbar (God is the Greatest)," came a shout as
Amrozi was being brought into the courtroom."
Prosecutors have demanded the court to sentence Amrozi
to death for helping to plot, organise and carry out the
attacks.
The verdict will be the first handed down for the
blasts and will come just two days after a suicide bomber
drove a van loaded with explosives similar to those used in
Bali into luxury hotel in Jakarta, killing at least 10
people.
Amrozi has been dubbed the smiling bomber and his
nonchalant behaviour in court has shocked many people.
He and a host of other Islamic militants are supposed to
be part of Jemaah Islmaiah (Islamic Community), a shadowy
militant Muslim group believed to have links to Osama bin
Laden's al Qaeda network.
The debate over capital punishment has been an ongoing
one. In Indonesia, the death penalty remains the punishment
for premeditated murder, terrorism, treason, drug
trafficking and crimes against humanity.
Relatives of victims from the Bali bombings feel
strongly about the death sentence for the militants.
Thirteen-year-old Linna Rarra Santi's father was a
victim of the Bali bombings. He was a security guard at the
Sari Club, which was completely destroyed during the
bombing.
Linna is praying and anxiously watching the trial unfold
from home.
Her mother, Wayan Rasni is hopeful Amrozi will get the
death sentence.
"I want him to get the death sentence and not only him
also people in his group. All of them should get the
death," said Rasni.
Geoff Phillips' had a different opinion on the death
sentence. His son Brett was on the dance floor of Sari Club
when the bomb exploded. Fortunately, Brett, who was in Bali
with a rugby club from Australia survived the explosion.
"Life. It's far to quick. Most people let victims suffer
for a long time. He won't even suffer for along time, I
think it's about the right decision. I was different, I
would have liked to see him executed a while ago, when it
first came up. But now, he should spend the rest of his
life in jail, do it hard time like a lot of people back in
Australia are doing," said Phillips.
The chief of police, Made Mangku Pastika spoke to
reporters on the nature of the crime.
"The modus operandi is how many commit the crime, what
they use, that means they use and the target, " said Pastika
"That's the soft target, the same as in Bali, Bali is a
soft target, that's the shops restaurants and hotels,"
added Pastika.
