- Story Text: More than 100 Arab MPs from 18 Arab states were meeting
in Baghdad on Tuesday to show solidarity with Iraq and to
oppose and reject the American threats of military action
against it.
Iraq, trying to muster Arab support against a
potential U.S. military action to change the government in
Baghdad, called the extraordinary meeting of the Arab
Parliamentary Union.
The two-day meeting is attended by speakers, deputy
speakers and top MPs from 18 Arab countries.
At the meeting, Iraq urged the Arab people to counter any
attack on Iraq.
"The Arab Nation should stand firm against any aggression,
either on Iraq or any other Arab country in accordance with
the Arab League's Charter," Vice-Chairman of the Revolutionary
Command Council Izzat Ibrahim said.
Speaker of the Iraqi National Assembly (parliament),
Sa'doun Hammadi, said Iraq was not scared by American threats.
"When there will be legal decisions, there will be
political decisions. There will be also decisions concerning
public opinion mobilisation in the Arab world and abroad,
especially in Europe and the International Parliamentary
Union," Hammadi said.
In its meeting in the United Arab Emirates last year, the
Arab Parliamentary Union called for an end to the 12-year
sanctions imposed on on Iraq.
