- Story Text: Fierce clashes between insurgents and U.S. forces in
rebel stronghold of Ramadi/ Residents of Haditha bury their
dead after 'Operation Quick Strike'.
At least five civilians were wounded on Wednesday
(August 10, 2005) when a fierce gunbattle broke out between U.S.
forces and insurgents in Ramadi west of Baghdad,
Witnesses said the gunbattle followed an attack against
a U.S. convoy in central Ramadi, which damaged an armoured
Humvee, although this could not be confirmed and there was
no immediate report from the U.S. military of an attack.
The town has witnessed sporadic shooting and
intermittent clashes over the past few days.
Ramadi, 110 km (70 miles) west of Baghdad remains a
base for rebels opposed to Iraq's interim government and
their U.S. allies.
In the western town of Haditha, residents started
burying their dead on Wednesday after a U.S.-led offensive
against insurgents going under the name of 'Operation Quick
Strike.'
People gathered in one of the town's cemeteries,
praying for one of the dead.
Over 1,000 U.S. and Iraqi troops led a major offensive
against insurgents in the Euphrates Valley west of Baghdad.
Witnesses said U.S. forces blew up a key bridge at Haditha
and soldiers raided homes.
On Wednesday (August 3), a roadside bomb just outside
Haditha, 200 km (120 miles) northwest of Baghdad, killed 14
Marines, the deadliest attack of its kind since the war
began.
The attack raised questions about whether Washington
has underestimated the strength of the insurgency, which
appears only to have grown stronger over the past two years.
